Society Sale, Worcester, Friday 2nd September 2011

Sams Unbeatable AFS/11/00253 bred by Andrew Froggatt, sired by Millside Ram (DJA/08/3533/P) out of a Greenwen Dam. Sold for 1700gns.

The Blue Texel Sheep Socitey’s Annual show & Sale at Worcester again recorded a cracking demand with a top of 1700gns for the Overall Champion “Sams Unbeatable” a ram lamb from A. Froggatt’s “Sams” Staffordshire based flock being purchased by W.W. McCurdie, Birdingbury, Rugby, Warks. Rams were well supported with the First prize senior ram who had previously won Breed Champion at the Three Counties and Royal Welsh Shows from Sarah Chambers making 1500gns to RM & JM Watkins, Craswell, Hereford. Another four figure price of 1400gns was reached for a ram lamb from Glyn Arrowsmith’s Pen-Y-Bec flock going to S. & S. Murray, Pattingham, Wolverhampton.

Females were closely followed by a packed sale ring and peaked at a creditable 840gns, for a ewe lamb from Sue Andrew’s “Miserden” flock that had taken First, Female and Reserve Overall Champion in the show going to P. Sutton, Warninglid, West Sussex. Shearling Ewes were hotly contested throughout with the top in that section at 760gns from DL & BWH Jones “Beili Blues” to W. McCurdie, Rugby, Warks. Two prize winning shearling ewes both hit the 740gns mark, a First prize winner from Sarah chambers and a Second prize winner from Sue Andrews both purchased by M.N. Jones, Talsarnau, Gwynedd.

At Friday's Blue Texel Society Sale at Worcester the three top priced animals sold were all sired by rams from the Millside Flock, firstly the Overall champion, a ram lamb from the Sams flock (A. Froggatt, Abbots Bromley, Staffordshire). This upstanding lamb was by a son of our Jonsland ram JOJ – 4701N and out of a ewe bred by Iwan Evans, and sold for the top price of the day, 1700gns., to Heather McCurdie (MAC flock) based at Birdingbury, Rugby .

The next highest price was for the aged ram which was sold by Sarah Chambers from Devon (Shearstone flock) to Messrs. Watkins, Hereford for 1500gns. This 2011 Three Counties and Royal Welsh Show Champion was sired by a son of Craigalbert and out of a Millicomb ewe.

The third top price went to another ram lamb, this one shown by Glyndwr Arrowsmith, Hereford , sold at 1400gns. He was sired by a Craigalbert son and is out of a home bred ewe (Pen-Y-Bec flock.)

The blue Texel resurgence of interest continued at Worcester with the Society's show & Sale hitting a top of 1,450gns for the Overall Champion, a two year old Ram from Sarah Chambers' Shearstone flock that had already won Breed and Reserve Interbreed Pairs at the Three Counties Show earlier this year, the ram going to J. Lyle Jnr., Fife, Scotland.


Shearling Ewes enjoyed a close following peaking at 650gns for Andrew and Sylvia Pajak's second prize ewe going to D. Jones, Pencader, Carmarthen. The "Miserden" flock from Aubrey and Sue Andrews always has strong support and they achieved 620gns and 540gns respectively for their two yearling ewes, both taken by J. Lyle Jnr., Fife.


Rams were a selective trade however one high spot was the first prize ram lamb from Nina Smith's Blue Stone flock that his poll position at 600gns to Mrs P Ball, Tenbury Wells, Worcester.

Bishops Blue Texels reach 2000gns top at Worcester, Saturday 21-August-2010

Top call at Saturday's sale to disperse the Bishops flock of Blue Texels for Andrew and Becky Bishop at Worcester on Saturday was a 2000gns sale for the flock's former show ewe. This one is a daughter of Gee 05/0012L out of a Marteg dam and has an impressive show record, having picked up the breed championship at the Three Counties in 2007 as a lamb and the same award at the Royal in the same year. She was also female champion at the same shows in 2008 and 2009 and sold to J Lyle, Leven, Fife.

Next best in the ewes was a 1750gns call for a daughter of the top priced ewe, February 2009-born shearling ewe Bishops Rebecca. This was first as a lamb at the Royal and Three Counties and reserve breed champion at Three Counties this year. she joined her mother, going to Fife with Mr Lyle.

After that in the flock ewes came a brace of 1050gns bids, the first of which came for a March 2007-born paternal sister to the top priced lot out of an imported ewe, this one sold to Hayley Clarke, Hevingham, Norfolk. And Mrs Clarke also secured the other to make this price, another by the same sire and this time out of a Marteg dam.

At 950gns was another shearling ewe, Bishops Rosetta, a daughter of Bishops 05/0003L out of Bishops 05/0002L. This one also sold to Mrs Clarke.

Topping the ewe lambs was an 1100gns sale for another daughter of the top priced ewe, Bishops 10/501. This one is sired by homebred tup Bishops 08/2632 which was breed champion at the Three Counties last year. Buyer here was again Mrs Clarke.

The same took the second top priced ewe lamb at 1000gns. This was one of this year's show ewe lambs Bishops 10/517, a daughter of the homebred tup out of Bishops 08/2624.

In the rams the trade was led at 1200gns by a tup lamb, Bishops 10/502, by homebred sire Bishops 08/2632 out of the top priced ewe. He sold to D Jones, Pencader, Carmarthen. Next best was a 900gns bid for a shearling tup by Gee 05/0012 out of an imported ewe, he went to P J Jones, Builth Wells. And at 820gns was Bishops 10/508, a ram lamb by the homebred sire out of an imported ewe, this one sold to Sue Andrews, Stroud.

Averages; 11 flock ewes £947.86, nine shearling ewes £861, 13 ewe lambs £586.38, nine shearling rams £498.17, 10 ram lambs £458.85 (McCartneys).

The second annual sale of Blue Texels on Friday 4 th September held by McCartneys at Worcester market saw a flying trade. Unfortunately the six females catalogued were all withdrawn leaving many disappointed purchasers, but the remaining ten rams sold to the top price of 750gns for Sue Andrew’s Miserden Oscar selling to Campbell & Son of Craigalbert, Ballantrae in Scotland. Top priced ram lamb was also from Miserden with Rodney changing hands at 600gns to Sarah Chambers in Devon. Both rams had been successfully shown throughout the year and carried unrelated bloodlines for their purchasers.

Overall there was 100% clearance with a healthy average of £428. The Blue Texel Society apologises to prospective purchasers of females and we hope there may be some females to interest you at the Builth NSA sale on Monday 21 st September.
