Some of our Commercial Ewes.
Our commercial flock of sheep is made up of Welsh Halfbred ewes, first and second Texel Cross ewes and three-quarter Texel Cross ewes. We breed all our own flock replacements and are a self-contained flock. The Texel Rams we use on these ewes to breed our finished lambs come from our own flock of pedigree Texel sheep (Jonsland Flock). We produce the highest quality of finished lambs, what the market wants. All our lambs are fattened and go straight from the farm to the abattoir, which takes half an hour. The abattoir is Hamer International Ltd, Dolwen, Llanidloes, Powys. The Texel and Texel Cross lambs we sell, have proven to be the Butcher's choice. Conformation and carcass quality set Texel lambs apart from the rest. The breed has improved greatly in this country during the last twenty years. There is a lot of demand for Texel and Texel Cross lambs. The Texel is a leaner cutting lamb, they have a better shape and a greater meat to bone ratio. Without doubt Texels produce more E's, U's and R's carcasses and therefore more saleable meat. Our Lamb is sold to Waitrose Supermarket Group and will ideally grade out in the Meat and Livestock Commission category E,U or R betwewen 17 to 21 kilos dead grades. The scheme works well for us with a high percent of our Texel and Texel Cross lambs hitting these specifications. We believe that this type of marketing for prime lamb is the way forward. Our lamb is marketed as Waitrose Farm Assured Welsh Lamb. It is cut and packed at Dalehead Foods Ltd, Cambridge for Waitrose and sold in the larger Waitrose Branches in South of England. We are members of FAWL - Farm Assured Welsh Livestock. |
